Again! Again!

The DVD of 'Cog' arrived in the post yesterday. It's been widely blogged already, but I didn't realise Honda would send me a free DVD until I read it in Teresa's blog. I popped it into the iMac and watched it, then watched it again, then showed it to Jonathan, and anyone else I could find. As well as the original Honda ad, there's a 'making of' short, and a diagram to let mechanically-challenged people like me work out what all the car parts are. And some Accord advertising, though rather less than I'd have been interested in watching, and too focused on leather trim rather than specifications.

Today, Jonathan saw me sitting down at the computer, tugged at my shirt, and said 'Cogs. Want cogs.' So I put it on the big telly, and showed him how to press the 'play' button on the DVD. And he sat down on the sofa with the remote control, and watched it over, and over, and over again.

You *also* want _The Way Things Go_, which Teresa
also mentioned.

I have it in DVD area-1, but I believe I've seen
a European DVD as well.

It's like the Honda ad, except half an hour long.

Wow! That's really cool that they send it out like that! DVD ordered for me too!

Thanks & happy blogging!

How do you get the Honda Cog DVD stateside (USA)?

Well, I've now harvested three copies, with the two spares spoken for by US households. My top tip would be to cultivate a Brit. (They're probably PAL, though, and may be Region 2, so there may be some technical detail.)

I live in the U.S. and was so amazed when I saw this ad on line that I just had to have a higher quality/resolution version. I was able to arrange with a nice fellow in the U.K. to get and send me a copy of the DVD.

Unfortunately, the quality of the DVD is horrible. The ad itself is 16:9, which is the norm for most European video. But on the DVD, it's letterboxed! (For those that don't know, 16:9 letterboxing is done in the DVD player for 4:3 TVs and should NEVER be done in the video itself because it destroys the quality on a 16:9 television.) On top of that, it looks like they threw out half of the fields, reducing the vertical resolution by 1/2! (Yes, they threw out the fields rather than even interpolating down, and then replicated the field remaining to encode a 720x576 DVD, which looks abysmal.)

I have no idea why they went to the trouble of making a DVD of such a wonderful ad and then screwing up the quality with a poor production. Most anyone could have done better with a home-brew setup....such a shame.

Anyone interested in sending a DVD to the US? I want one (even if the quality isn't what it should be). Please email me if you are willing.
